Crofton is a mill town on Osborne Bay, with the Salt Spring ferry at the foot of the hill and a grid of modest older houses climbing the slope above it. Most of those houses are simple shapes: a gable or a hip, one storey or a storey and a half, the same roofline they were built with decades ago. Plenty still carry their original gutters.
That is the starting point for gutter work here. The job is rarely complicated, but the gutters are often older than the people who own them.

Older gutters, older fixings
Simple roofs are good news for access: fewer valleys, fewer dormers, and gutter runs you can reach without a fight. The catch is age. Many older gutters were hung with spikes driven through the trough into the fascia, and after years of wet winters those spikes work loose. A gutter full of wet debris weighs far more than an empty one, and that weight is what finally pulls a loose run forward off the house.
Once the gutter tilts, water no longer reaches the downspout. It sits in the low spot, spills over the front edge and runs down the face of the fascia. On older wood trim, that is how rot starts.
So a Crofton clean is as much an inspection as a clean. We empty each run by hand, flush it, and watch how the water travels to the outlet. Anything sagging, any hanger that has let go, any seam that drips: you hear about it before we leave.

Wind off the bay
Houses near the water get the weather straight off Osborne Bay. They tend to have fewer trees overhead, so the debris load is lighter, but what does land is grit, cones and twigs carried down from the slopes behind town. Strong wind also drives rain sideways and can push water past the gutter lip on a steep pitch. That is worth knowing before you assume a clean gutter has failed.
Salt air is hard on steel. Older galvanized gutters and the screws holding them corrode faster near the shore, and rust at the joints is often the first sign a run is nearing the end of its life.
Why choose us
Why choose us for gutter cleaning in crofton
Gentle on old gutters
Brittle seams and tired hangers are handled with care. We clear by hand rather than levering packed debris out with force.
Every hanger looked at
On older runs the fixings fail before the trough does. We check them along the full length while we work.
Town lot or rural lot
Storm connection on the grid, ditch or splash pad out on the road: each downspout is flushed to wherever it actually drains.
Insured and WCB-registered
Locally owned, more than ten years on Vancouver Island rooflines, and work backed by our guarantee.

Behind the townsite
Away from the grid, along Osborne Bay Road and on the lower slopes of Maple Mountain, the lots get bigger and the trees close in. Douglas fir and bigleaf maple fill gutters here much faster than in town, and there is usually no storm drain. Downspouts run to a splash pad, a ditch at the road, or a rock pit somewhere in the yard. When the gutters overflow, the water lands in the wrong place, and on a sloped lot it heads for the crawlspace.
What a visit includes on these lots:
- Gutters cleared by hand along every run
- Downspouts flushed to the outlet, with the discharge point checked
- Debris bagged and taken away, not tipped into the bush

Crofton gutter cleaning FAQ
Our gutters are as old as the house. Is cleaning still worth it?
Usually, yes. An old gutter that drains is doing its job. Cleaning also lets us look closely at every hanger and joint, so you find out whether the run has years left or is close to the end. If it needs repair, we tell you plainly; you decide what happens next.
Rain blows straight over our gutters in a southeaster. Is that a blockage?
Not always. Wind-driven rain off the bay can overshoot a gutter that is perfectly clear, especially on a steep pitch. But if water spills at the same corner in calm rain too, there is likely a clog at the outlet or the gutter has lost its slope. We check both while we are up.
Do you come out to properties along Osborne Bay Road?
Yes. We cover the townsite, the waterfront, the rural lots along Osborne Bay Road and the houses toward Maple Mountain and Westholme. Longer driveways are no problem; just mention any gates or tight turns.
How often should a Crofton gutter be cleaned?
On the open streets near the water, once a year in late fall is often enough. Lots backing onto the trees toward Maple Mountain usually need a spring visit too, because the winter storms bring down needles, cones and small branches.
